You not necessarily have to grab a gun in your hand or enroll in the military to fight for freedom, because there are many other ways to do it. Over centuries art has been very effective in projecting a certain image in the mind of the audience, for better or worse and that’s why famous people surrounded themselves by artists. Shepard Fairey is not a militant, and you won’t find his work revolving around a certain organization or movement, but his doesn’t make him any less effective.
The obey giant posters were the ones that establish him as a talented artist, but that wasn’t the peak of his career, with the Hope poster being the best example. Magazines are happy to promote his work and the awards being won confirmed his vocation, but arguably the most important token of appreciation comes from the audience itself. Many people who have no direct link with street art, acknowledge the value of his work and are ready to decorate their rooms with original prints.
An obey giant image wouldn’t have cost you too much some years ago, but now a Shepard Fairey print is worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Liberty, peace and the duality of human nature are all depicted in his posters and most of them create a strong image that lingers in memory, long after you take your eyes of the print. To have such an work of art in your own living room, is a constant reminder of those things that we sometimes fail to think about, while struggling in the mundane daily activities.
